Marietta City School District is pleased to announce they have hired a new Marietta High School Varsity Head Football Coach. Mike Kupfner is set to lead the Tigers for the 2025-2026 season. While this will be his first head coaching position, Kupfner comes with a long list of experience including being a tight end for back to back State Championship teams at Parkersburg (2006-2007).
He began his coaching career at Hamilton Middle School where he helped win two county championships while running their offense. After that he joined Coach Don Reeves at Parkersburg High as the tight ends coach, and worked with the defensive backs. His next promotion with the Big Reds was as Defensive Coordinator. Kupfner then moved to South Carolina for several years. Upon his return he rejoined Parkersburg as the wide receivers coach and eventually regained his defensive coordinator position up until being hired as our new head coach.
Kupfner first graduated from Parkersburg High School before getting his Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from West Virginia University at Parkersburg. He went on to West Liberty to obtain a Master’s Degree in Sports Leadership and Coaching. Kupfner will also be joining our district in the classroom as an intervention specialist.
Interim High School Principle and Curriculum and Technology Director Tim Fleming is excited about the hire and looks forward to seeing the impact that Mike has on the field and in the classroom. “Mike’s background is impressive and we are ready for what he can bring in his roles with our district. We know that his education and experience will translate well when mentoring and educating students throughout our District.”
Kupfner’s has a wife and three children and he mentioned they were so excited to engrain themselves in the community and building a program everyone can be proud of. “I am thrilled to have this opportunity to lead the Marietta Tiger Football Program. I look forward to bringing a lot of energy and creativity to the program. It truly takes a village to make a program run, so with that being said if anyone in the community or the school who has an idea or a talent that we could use to build the program, I encourage you to reach out to me!”
